In March of 2016, The New York Times ran a rave review of Orphic Moments – a “gripping” interdisciplinary operatic evening performed at National Sawdust. Its closing line was, “Why does it run for just two consecutive evenings, and for fewer than 300 people?”
MasterVoices is about to answer that call. For the past 8 months, Artistic Director Ted Sperling has been working with the Orphic creative team – wunderkind director Zack Winokur and polymath designer Doug Fitch – to adapt the evening for the unique talents of MasterVoices.
Our production will premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 1,100-seat Rose Theater on Sunday, May 6th and Monday, May 7th, featuring members of the original cast – countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, soprano Kiera Duffy, violinist Keir GoGwilt – along with soprano Lauren Snouffer, dancer Bobbi Jene Smith, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and, of course, the MasterVoices chorus, all under the baton of Maestro Sperling. The multimedia evening pairs a new dramatic cantata by young composer Matthew Aucoin, The Orphic Moment, with an innovative staging of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice.
Monday’s performance will be special, as it is our Spring Benefit. We will honor both composer Paola Prestini, the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of National Sawdust, and the venue itself – where Orphic Moments received its New York premiere – for its mission to nurture emerging artists. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 6 pm at the Ascent Lounge prior to the 7 pm concert, which will be followed by an intimate dinner with the artists.
Orphic Moments has already generated extraordinary levels of excitement thanks to press coverage of its several productions — most notably those at National Sawdust and Salzburg — as well as its pioneering design, unusual cast, and demanding technical requirements. The Benefit Performance will guarantee your seats. We promise a thrilling evening that will delight you and your guests!
