It’s been a year unlike any other. No one has been left untouched by the pandemic, or the gale-force winds of political and social change. So with this unveiling of our season, we hope to give you a feeling of optimism, excitement, and anticipation for something wonderful in 2021!
That something wonderful is Myths & Hymns, an epic song cycle by Tony Award–winner Adam Guettel (Light in the Piazza, To Kill a Mockingbird). The performances will be virtual, but this is not just another Zoom offering. In fact, our vision for it – 23 songs, released in four “chapters” across six months, resembling mini film festivals – has already drawn amazing and diverse talent including Anderson & Roe, Renée Fleming, Julia Bullock, Kelli O’Hara, Elizabeth Stanley, Capathia Jenkins, and Take 6. And that’s just part of Chapter One!
Myths & Hymns is a kaleidoscopic collection of musical genres that explores the nature of faith and longing in a secular world. With influences ranging from Gabriel Fauré to Stevie Wonder to Caetano Veloso, we believe it has something for everybody. And by making it free, we hope you will not only attend, but make it a party. Now you can “bring” all your friends!
Details are below. But what we most want you to know is: we chose this work because we think it answers a deep need. How do we connect, find meaning and fulfillment when so many of our usual ways – gathering, singing, embracing – have become existential threats? It is an epic question, and so we have turned to epic source material for answers.
Myths & Hymns makes YOU the protagonist, attempting to resolve a hunger inside that is not easily categorized or sated – the feeling that something has been lost, and a yearning for fulfillment. Each of the four chapters explores a different place where the answer may lie.
This project is our gift to you. We hope it will bring a sense of joy, possibility, and strength – ‘til we get to the other side.
